Healthy Sloppy Joes

Healthy Sloppy Joess
Ever get a hankering for one of your favorite childhood meals?

Last week, out of the blue, I decided I was in the mood for a Sloppy Joe. I have no idea where that craving came from – I haven’t had one in years. So, I asked Prince Charming if he had a secret recipe for Sloppy Joes up his sleeve.

Let me tell you, Prince Charming makes the most amazing Sloppy Joes! The sandwich he made me was so incredibly flavorful, I just had to share the recipe with you! Your husbands will love it. Your children will love it. And, most of all, you will love it, because it is healthier than most Sloppy Joe recipes!

Enjoy!

Ingredients

60 Ounces (3 Packages) Ground Turkey
3 Large Brown Onions, Finely Chopped
4 Large Green Bell Peppers, Finely Chopped
4-5 Tablespoons Olive Oil
2 Teaspoons Black Pepper
3-4 Tablespoons Garlic Powder
½ to ¾ Cup BBQ Sauce

Instructions

1. Combine everything except for the BBQ sauce in a pan.

2. Cook until the green peppers are tender, the onions are translucent, and the ground turkey is brown – approximately 20 minutes.

3. Add the BBQ sauce and mix thoroughly.

4. Cook until you achieve the desired consistency – not too much liquid and not too dry.

Delicious In Or Out Of A Bun!
Serving Suggestions

Serve over rice or on a toasted hamburger or potato bun.

  2. That looks soooo tasty! I have substituted ground turkey for ground beef in many of my family's favourite recipes but have never swapped it in our sloppy joes. I am definitely trying your recipe! Thanks for sharing!

  13. hi :-) Out of curiosity I followed you link here from Jen's 11th Heaven Homemakers Monday.

Yes, out of curiosity. See, recently somebody gave me a recipe for "healthier" Sloppy Joe's, And I wanted to compare yours with it. Turns out the two are very different! The one that was given to me calls for: Hamburg, onion, celery, vinegar, brown sugar, mustard, catchup, water, Worchest. sauce, and oatmeal.

I should tell you that at first I cringed when I read "Ground Turkey" at the top of your recipe. Big time! See, years ago now, we were served sloppy joe's made out of ground turkey. Our hostess had made them out of ground turkey and tomato sauce. NOTHING more! No spice. No flavorings. No thickener. NOTHING more. And they were horrible!!!

But I shall continue on and tell you that you redeemed yourself and stopped my cringing, by what else you added to your recipe. ;-> I no longer feel sorry for the people who had to eat yours. o;-p!

  33. It's kind of funny because a while back I was craving "good old sloppy joes" like what I remembered as a kid. So what did I do? Yep, went out and bought the big can and mixed it with some ground chuck. Boy was I DISAPPOINTED-nothing like I remembered. It was horrible-we threw out the leftovers. I'll have to give this one a try soon.

  34. Definitely a different version of Sloppy joe's than I am used to... I want to try this out one day! Thanks for posting it.

  35. Hi sweet P!!! Sorry I am late to commenting, but you wouldn't believe the computer issues I have been having! Thank goodness all is well now! One of my husband's favorite dishes is sloppy joe and to him that means manwich and I have been trying for years to make a better and healthier variety! I have come up with lots of options and I will definitely be trying yours. I think at this point his "childhood memories" of manwich are far better than the real thing! Thanks so much for sharing this with us on the hearth and soul hop! hugs! Alex
